Rainwater Harvesting information

Climate change has and will continue to play a big part in our lives. The demand for water resources has risen however the availability of water has declined. Along with these problems, homes and businesses are across the UK are being fitted with water meters, which means water is now even more expensive.

Rainwater falls from the sky for free if we simply filter it then storing it in a water tank/butt you can water your garden or even pipe straight into your home and use the water to flush the toilet or do the laundry.

Recycling your rainwater has many advantages, first being; its free, you can store as much as you want then reuse it how you want. Second is that rainwater is softer then tap water, which means that if you were to use the rainwater in you washing machine lime scale would take longer to appear. If you were using the water for you garden, then some plants respond better to rainwater than tap water.

Why should we harvest rainwater?

We use 70% water today than we did 40 years

By reducing your water usage you can:

  • Save money on our water bills (especially if your on a water meter)

  • Reduce the possibility of a drought, which will lead to a hosepipe ban.

  • Reduce the damage which is done to wildlife in wetlands, reservoir and rivers.

DIY Rainwater Harvesting In Garden

These rainwater harvesting systems can be connected straight into you existing irrigation system them will never have to worry about your plants and garden not being watered when you're on holiday.

Once your system is setup there is no end to the uses of the water you save. You can connect a pressure washer to the tap outlet and use the rainwater to wash your car or even clean your patio.

Rainwater Collection FAQ's

Q: I have a high water table and feel an underground water would not be suitable for me, what should I do?

A: High water tables are not uncommon, installing an underground can still be done, however this would mean you encasing the entire tank in concrete. Otherwise if you still feel unsure about an underground water tank then you could have a large water tank over ground or a number of water butts connected together.

Q: Can I install a rainwater harvesting system in a existing house?

A: Yes a rainwater harvesting system can be install at anytime, however if you are thinking of a new build you are better to install while at the footing stage of the build.

DIY Rainwater Harvesting The Home

Why not use rainwater to flush your toilet? Or use rainwater to clean your plates?. Rainwater has many uses in the home this is just some of them. Once you have collected the water in the tank how do you get it out? The water pump inside the house will extract the water from the tank and then pump it up to where you need it.

Most people will have their rainwater pumped directly into their loft tank as this is what feeds most of the cold water tank and/or toilets and showers. Once the pump is the house there is no real end to the uses of the water, you can use tee pieces and pipe off to different applications; Such as:

- Washing Machine
- Dishwasher
- Header tank
- Toilets
- Kitchen Sinks

Commercial/Industry Use - Schools / Collages / Universities / Hotels / Workplaces

How much water do you think you use in your work place? Or how much water do you think is used in hotels/B&B's, you could save money on your water bill by using rainwater. One of the best things about Ecosure Rainwater Harvesting Tanks is that they can connect together give you a larger volume of water, then, just like a normal house hold system, the water can be recycled back into the header tank of the building then reused when someone flushes the toilet or turns on the tap.
